Mesothelioma/Asbestos-Related Illness Archives

Contaminated vermiculite insulation and asbestos exposure

As a follow-up to a recent blog post discussing the dangers of vermiculite insulation, we thought it was a good idea to talk more on this subject. Specifically, we wanted to address this type of insulation in the hopes of helping residents in Illinois and other areas recognize whether their homes contain this substance.

Proposed U.S. Senate bill would ban all asbestos use

Despite the known health risks of asbestos, the U.S. still imports a significant amount of the mineral fiber for use in some manufacturing processes. While it is not legal to mine asbestos in the U.S., its use is allowed for some specific purposes. Many countries in the world have completely banned asbestos.

Despite the known dangers of asbestos, mesothelioma deaths are still high

Since the 1970s, asbestos use in the United States has consistently dropped. Unfortunately, however, the number of mesothelioma deaths has not experienced a similar decrease. In fact, some studies show that mesothelioma deaths may even be increasing.

Loose-filled asbestos can increase mesothelioma risk

Asbestos exposure is a known risk for those in the construction and mining industries. However, a new study out of Australia is suggesting that even just having loose-filled asbestos (vermiculite insulation) in your home can increase the risk of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma/asbestos-related illness | Navy veterans take heed!

While service members were toiling aboard navy vessels during the World War II era, most had no idea that an additional threat lurked aboard these vessels. This threat carried no weapons and it did not care about political or social viewpoints. It could affect anyone and it had no emotional connections to keep it in check. This threat was asbestos and it occupied nearly every part of the navy in that era.

What are the surgical options for mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers internal organs. We represent clients with cancer in the mesothelium of their lungs (pleura) after inhaling asbestos fibers. This is called pleural mesothelioma. While there is currently no cure, there are treatment options available that can help ease pain, reduce symptoms and prolong life.

Can doctors detect mesothelioma early enough to treat?

One of the most tragic things about mesothelioma or other asbestos-related illness is the life expectancy after a patient receives a diagnosis. Typically, patients with this type of cancer live for only a year or so after diagnosis. However, most experts on mesothelioma and asbestos-related illnesses agree that early diagnosis is critical. Unfortunately, making a diagnosis early enough to extend life is often difficult for doctors.

Imported asbestos within the nation's chlorine industry

The mining of asbestos is against the law in the United States because it is linked to severe health hazards such as mesothelioma/asbestos-related illness. However, as this blog recently reported, use of this hazardous substance still occurs in the nation thanks to an ongoing importation of raw asbestos. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the chlor-alkali, or chlorine industry, uses over 90 percent of the asbestos imported into the country.

Montana sued over lax asbestos enforcement

Montana has stringent laws regarding the handling and disposal of asbestos, and for good reason. Asbestos dust is highly toxic and causes several deadly diseases, including mesothelioma and lung cancer. Because of its danger, any removal of asbestos must be handled extremely carefully and disposed of properly.
