Where asbestos can be found in the home

On TV, remodeling a house looks fun and easy. Want an open-space living concept? First take a sledgehammer to that wall. Of course, real life is never that simple. For example, if your house was made in the 1980s or earlier, that wall may contain asbestos sheeting or insulation.

What are the surgical options for mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers internal organs. We represent clients with cancer in the mesothelium of their lungs (pleura) after inhaling asbestos fibers. This is called pleural mesothelioma. While there is currently no cure, there are treatment options available that can help ease pain, reduce symptoms and prolong life.

Taking action against wrongful death involving opioids

If you listen to the news or read online articles, you know that America's opioid crisis is in full swing. Like other states, residents of Illinois have been affected by this crisis. According to the state of Illinois, "2,278 drug-related overdose deaths" occurred in 2016. This is nearly double the number of fatal overdoses that occurred in 2013. Clearly, opioid use and overdose is a problem in our state as it is elsewhere.

Diagnosed with mesothelioma or another type of cancer? Treat your mental health, too.

Cancer is a devastating diagnosis. We regularly work with unbelievably brave clients who have developed mesothelioma, lung cancer and other serious medical conditions after being exposed to asbestos. We have witnessed firsthand the grief, anxiety and depression that can occur to patients and family members after a diagnosis. While their determination and resiliency are inspiring, everyone has setbacks and must find ways to cope with a new normal.

Can doctors detect mesothelioma early enough to treat?

One of the most tragic things about mesothelioma or other asbestos-related illness is the life expectancy after a patient receives a diagnosis. Typically, patients with this type of cancer live for only a year or so after diagnosis. However, most experts on mesothelioma and asbestos-related illnesses agree that early diagnosis is critical. Unfortunately, making a diagnosis early enough to extend life is often difficult for doctors.

Imported asbestos within the nation's chlorine industry

The mining of asbestos is against the law in the United States because it is linked to severe health hazards such as mesothelioma/asbestos-related illness. However, as this blog recently reported, use of this hazardous substance still occurs in the nation thanks to an ongoing importation of raw asbestos. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the chlor-alkali, or chlorine industry, uses over 90 percent of the asbestos imported into the country.

Exposure to asbestos at work still happens across the nation

At one time, asbestos was highly regarded as an almost miracle fiber. It answered many problems associated with industries nationwide because it was strong, easy to work with and even helped reduce the risk of fire. However, as we all now know, asbestos exposure can be deadly, especially to workers who handle the material on a regular basis.

Montana sued over lax asbestos enforcement

Montana has stringent laws regarding the handling and disposal of asbestos, and for good reason. Asbestos dust is highly toxic and causes several deadly diseases, including mesothelioma and lung cancer. Because of its danger, any removal of asbestos must be handled extremely carefully and disposed of properly.

Is asbestos exposure increasing in remodeling projects?

In Chattanooga, the Tennessee Occupational Safety & Health Administration (TOSHA) is investigating the remodeling of an historic downtown hotel. According to workers on the project, unsafe remodeling was leading to the release of asbestos into the air.

U.S. is importing the most asbestos in years

We tend to think of asbestos as something that we used to use. This is only partly true. Asbestos mining is against the law. All asbestos mines have been shut down because asbestos is a highly toxic mineral that causes mesothelioma and lung cancer. And asbestos can no longer be used as insulation in homes, for example, and is widely prohibited.

A surprising source of asbestos exposure: driving off road

Mesothelioma, a rare and often terminal form of cancer, is often linked to asbestos exposure. Asbestos was used ubiquitously throughout the 20th century in construction due to its utility as insulation. Asbestos fibers are resistant to heat, fire and electricity.

Many irregularities at the school where an autistic boy drowned

Those who live in Illinois already know about the tragic drowning of a 14-year-old autistic student while he was on school property. As more and more details about the student's death emerge, a picture of the school's lack of appropriate supervision is also coming into focus.
