Australian workers ask government to remove asbestos by 2030

Although this story is not from Madison County or elsewhere in the United States, it provides a look at the people who are fighting against asbestos and mesothelioma elsewhere in the world. It is interesting to compare the asbestos-related issues in other countries against those in our own, which vary significantly based on the laws, regulations and public sentiments of people living in those countries.

Scientists uncover possible gene mutation for mesothelioma

According to an estimate from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), about 11 million people in Illinois and throughout the country were exposed to asbestos between 1940 and 1978. Every year, approximately 3,000 people pass away from mesothelioma, half of whom only developed the disease within a year of their death.

Nuclear plant cleanup workers file asbestos lawsuit

Six men who worked to clean up a nuclear plant site in 2000 and 2001 have reportedly filed a personal injury lawsuit against the government contractors that ran the cleanup operation. In the suit, the plaintiffs claim that that the contractors purposely and negligently placed them at risk of asbestos exposure during the cleanup operation while denying any knowledge of those risks.

Donna Summer attributed her cancer to toxic air after 9/11

Fans of Donna Summer were saddened this week by the announcement of the singer's death at the age of 63. Although few details have been officially released, cancer is believed to have been the cause of Summer's untimely death, with reports indicating that Summer had been privately battling the disease for some time.

Benzene defendants seek removal to federal court

Last month, we wrote about the lawsuit that had been filed by the city of Roxana, Illinois against several companies. Now, two of the defendant companies have filed a motion to have the case removed from Madison County to federal court, describing the case as an "environmental action" that necessitates a federal case.

Study: Red wine could help with mesothelioma treatment

Although mesothelioma has been causing pain, injury and death to people in Illinois and across the U.S. for many years, there is still relatively little that doctors and researchers know about the disease. As a result, mesothelioma remains resistant to standard treatment methods, and about 2,500 Americans die from the disease every year.

Asbestos lawsuit filed over St. Louis steam pipe rupture

A St. Louis man has filed a lawsuit against an energy company in connection with last month's steam pipe explosion in downtown St. Louis. In the lawsuit, the plaintiff claims that the rupture caused him to be exposed to asbestos fibers, which, in turn, caused him to suffer "permanent and progressive injuries" to his respiratory system.

Should asbestos claims be dealt with administratively? (3)

This week, we have told the story of John Johnson, a man who died of mesothelioma the day after he completed more than 25 hours of deposition questioning from the defense attorneys in his asbestos lawsuit. Now, the sad end of Johnson's life has called into question the process of asbestos litigation in the United States.

Should asbestos claims be dealt with administratively? (2)

Earlier this week, we started a discussion about the propriety of putting gravely ill plaintiffs through demanding and exhausting depositions in preparation for the possibility that they will not survive until their trial date. In Illinois and most other states, an expedited trial can be ordered if the plaintiff's prognosis justifies it. Unfortunately, even that early date came too late for John Johnson, who passed away from mesothelioma three months prior to his scheduled asbestos lawsuit trial date.

Should asbestos claims be dealt with administratively? (1)

In January, a man named John Johnson died of malignant mesothelioma, less than two years after being diagnosed with the fatal disease. However, he did not spend the last days of his life with his wife and family, or doing the things that he loved to do. He spent them inside a hotel conference room, being barraged with questions from the defense attorneys in his asbestos lawsuit. In fact, he collapsed just after giving his last deposition and died the following day, a sad end to a life that had been cut much too short.
