Can Asbestos Cause Lung Cancer?
Yes, in addition to mesothelioma and the non-cancerous disease asbestosis (scarring of the lungs) — asbestos exposure can lead to lung cancer as well. The two common types of asbestos-related lung cancer are small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Asbestos and Smoking: A Destructive Combination
In the same way that mixing baking soda and vinegar together creates a reaction greater than you might expect — the combination of cigarette smoking and asbestos exposure dramatically increases the odds that an asbestos lung cancer will develop.
On a more positive note, there is evidence that quitting smoking will reduce the risk of lung cancer, even among asbestos-exposed workers. If you do smoke and were exposed to asbestos but are still healthy — we urge you to do whatever you can to quit.
Smoking does not appear to increase the risk of developing mesothelioma.
Symptoms associated with asbestos lung cancer include:
- Persistent cough
- Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing normally
- Hoarseness, difficulty speaking
- Blood or rust colored spit/mucus
- Chest pain
Medical Treatment Options
If discovered early enough, asbestos lung cancer is "curable" in the sense that it may still be possible to remove the entire tumor and surrounding tissues. As with mesothelioma, however — early diagnoses are too few and far between. Depending on the size of the tumor, its location, and the patient's age, health and preferences — treatment in cases of late stage diagnosis may include more drastic surgical options and most often, some combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy as well.
