Asbestos Lung Cancer

Can Asbestos Cause Lung Cancer?

Yes, in addition to mesothelioma and the non-cancerous disease asbestosis (scarring of the lungs) — asbestos exposure can lead to lung cancer as well. The two common types of asbestos-related lung cancer are small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Asbestos and Smoking: A Destructive Combination

The combination of cigarette smoking and asbestos exposure dramatically increases the odds that lung cancer will develop.

On a more positive note, there is evidence that quitting smoking will reduce the risk of lung cancer, even among asbestos-exposed workers. If you do smoke and were exposed to asbestos but are still healthy — we urge you to do whatever you can to quit.

Smoking does not appear to increase the risk of developing mesothelioma.

Symptoms associated with asbestos lung cancer include:

  • Persistent cough
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing normally
  • Hoarseness, difficulty speaking
  • Blood or rust colored spit/mucus
  • Chest pain

Medical Treatment Options

If you have mesothelioma or asbestos lung cancer, your treatment options vary based on several factors such as, the size of the tumor, stage of cancer at diagnosis, its location, the patient's age, and overall health. Treatment in cases of late stage diagnosis may include more drastic surgical options and most often, some combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy as well.
