Following the Tonkin Gulf Incident, the USS Vancouver carried Marines and supplies to the Western Pacific, bringing three different groups of Marines to the area. She then conducted training exercises and various amphibious missions for the duration of the Vietnam War. She earned 11 battle stars for her service during the Vietnam war.

Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.

Anyone who served on an attack transport should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
